Torran James founded TORRA in 2020 on a pretty simple idea: work’s just better when the right people land in the right roles, and when clients and candidates actually look out for one another. Not a revolutionary thought on paper, but in an industry that too often treats people like line items, living it is the hard part.

He’s spent over 15 years in recruitment to know the difference. That career was built inside large national agencies and multi-national operations across civil construction, infrastructure, mining, resources, manufacturing, logistics and energy. These are the heavy, high-stakes industries where getting it wrong costs real money and, worse, puts people at risk.

Labour hire, permanent placement, managed workforces, payroll, safety, workforce strategy; he’s done the lot, and he’s done it at scale. So when a client talks, he already knows what keeps them up at night.

It’s also why TORRA doesn’t feel like a start-up finding its feet. You’re dealing with people who’ve been around the block, know these industries back to front, and would rather have the honest conversation than the easy one.

Outside of work, Torran’s a dad of two, and he’ll be the first to tell you that his wife Laura is a huge part of why TORRA is what it is today. Each year he also takes on the Big Three Trek, a 150km walk from Sydney to Newcastle for the Mark Hughes Foundation, with the whole TORRA team walking beside him and the business backing the trek the whole way through.
